The Rio Earth summit of 1992 was indeed a landmark event and
a watershed in matters relating to the Earth and the environment.
For the first time the effort to tackle the myriad of environmental
issues and concerns was put in bold relief. Also the Kernel
of a vision was born at that summit.
Without overemphasis, the Niger Delta Wetland, the third largest
in the world covering an estimated area of about 70,000sq kilometers,
has suffered palpable neglect, degradation and an indisputable
measure of violence due to the activities of the direct consequences
of oil and gas, industrial and anthropogenic activities. For
far too long this lapse was allowed to fester and the environment
was worse for it. Until the wind of change blew.
A group of concerned people decided to be part of that change.
And due to the absence or weakness, of an integrated and sound
environmental management plan for the sustainable development
of the Niger Delta, the idea of FEPEN as a non-profit, non-governmental
organization to play a crucial role in confronting the challenges
to protect the Niger Delta communities and environment was mooted.
FEPEN has at its helm of affair
a Board of Trustees, an Executive Council and an Advisory Council.
Its activities are also run within the Directorates of projects,
Information/Education, Research/planning, Public/Community Affairs,
Library Services and Women Affairs Directorate within which
the FEPEN Women Development Training, Research
and Documentation Center (FEWDOC)
